Having worked with a number of athletes over many years, I know how
important the mental game is in sports. It can be the difference between
being merely good, and outstanding. Hypnosis has been used by top
level sport performers for many years – the first documented case was
at the Melbourne Olympics 1956, when the Russian team employed 11
hypnotists. Mike Brearley the England cricket captain used hypnosis for
improving batting confidence, and there are many examples in the
sporting arena, of hypnotherapists working alongside athletes and sports
coaches to improve performance.
It is about being able to deal with the mental pressures, if the mind is not
right, then the body will not perform. People talk about the ’zone’ – and this is a mental
state that can be achieved with proper guidance and practice. A person’s ability to focus, be
motivated and have the right level of arousal in order to perform is often overlooked. Hours
spent with great coaches refining the minutiae of your technical sporting excellence will
be wasted if when you start your performance you are wracked with nerves and anxiety.
Spending time on this area of your game may be the key to greater advancement and
progression.
